Which nominees came out on top?

“Oh, my God. Please tell me you’re seeing this too”, Malek, who plays an emotionally troubled engineer caught up in a unsafe hacking conspiracy, said after winning the honour.

“Game of Thrones” won separate awards for best writing in a TV series and best drama.

“Master of None” star Aziz Ansari, who penned an essay in June for the New York Times entitled “Why Trump Makes Me Scared for My Family”, quipped on stage, “I’ve decided I’m going with Trump”. It was her third win for playing the formidable dowager.

Before Soloway left the stage, she exclaimed, “Topple the patriarchy!” twice into the microphone.

“If it wasn’t for television, would Donald Trump be running for president?”

“She’ll tell me where it will go in our house”, he said. “Our show started out as a political satire”, she said, “but it now feels more like a sobering documentary”. She promised to “rebuild that wall and make Mexico pay for it”.

When the victor was called for outstanding supporting actress drama series the audience let out a bout of laughter to learn it was Smith. As has become her custom, she didn’t attend the ceremony.

Louis-Dreyfus’s Sunday night victory elevated her to legendary status both for overall Outstanding Actress wins as well as for wins in a row, thus eclipsing Helen Hunt’s four awards for “Mad About You”.

Oh sure, white men still won plenty of awards, but even host Jimmy Kimmel made some jokes about how the open acceptance of diversity wasn’t necessarily “good” for him. “So, this is nice, but this evening genuinely has a sense of loss”. The glamorous event offered a few surprises as well as two big winners: The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story and Game of Thrones. She dedicated her award to her father, who recently died.
