Northwestern loses 45-6 to Tennessee
Tennessee beat Iowa in last season’s Taxslayer Bowl and is looking for wins in consecutive bowl appearances for the first time since beating Ohio State and Northwestern in the 1996 and 1997 Florida Citrus Bowl games.

Tennessee and Northwestern both came into the game with high confidence as each team was coming into the Outback Bowl with 5 game winning streaks. The Vols opened up the scoring in the final minute of the first quarter when Joshua Dobbs ran in from 14 yards out giving Tennessee a 7-0 lead.In the second quarter, the Vols added an Aaron Medley field goal taking a 10-0 lead with 10:47 remaining in the first half. Sophomore running back Jalen Hurd ran for 130 yards and a touchdown while Junior quarterback Josh Dobbs rushed for 2 touchdowns of his own.
The Northwestern Wildcats will play the Tennessee Volunteers in the Outback Bowl. Zack Oliver and Clayton Thornson combined to complete 14-of-33 throws for 129 yards with no scores and four interceptions.
The Outback Bowl between the Tennessee Volunteers and Northwestern Wildcats was a one-sided affair on Friday, as the Volunteers steamrolled the Wildcats 45-6. Northwestern is good enough to keep them in check much of the game, but if the Vols pounds it (and there’s no reason to think they won’t), they should get some chunk plays on the ground in the second half. “I just go out there, whatever play they call I execute it to the best of my ability”. Thorson was completely shut down by the Tennessee defense, completing eight of his 20 passing attempts for just 57 yards and a pair of interceptions.
“The road to success is always under construction, and we need to continue to recruit and develop, and continue to grow and elevate our football program”, Jones said. Jackson had 74 yards on 14 carries and the Cats’ only score, and sophomore cornerback Keith Watkins II played well in place of injured senior Nick VanHoose.
The Cats had nothing happening on the offensive side of the ball Friday, and a defense that was one of the nation’s finest this season was dominated by the Tennessee rushing attack in a 45-6 loss in the Outback Bowl.
Justin Jackson has 1344 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns for the Wildcats. He ran for two touchdowns and three for 166 yards.
Players to watch • Ole Miss QB Kelly has thrown for 3,740 yards, 27 TDs and 12 interceptions, generally improving as the year has progressed.
Temple: Only 15 FBS teams have averaged fewer points per game than Northwestern this season. The Vols were the better team today, but Wildcat players and fans should be encouraged by an unexpected 10 win season, not discouraged by running into a team that gave two of the Playoff teams all they could handle.
“We’ve got a lot of work to do”.
NOTES: RB Jalen Hurd became the first player in Tennessee history to rush for 100 yards in two bowl games.
Tennessee might not be the academic juggernaut Northwestern is, but defensive tackle Kahlil McKenzie took to Twitter to let everyone know GPAs don’t count on the football field. The first four touchdown drives covered 75, 75, 67 and 80 yards.

The Tennessee Volunteers could have had a very special season this year but blown double-digit leads in the first part of the year cost them dearly. “Last night they had that look in their eye, and this morning, I could sense it”.
