Northwestern, Vols take 5-game win streaks into Outback Bowl
When Tennessee got the ball back they appeared to have been stopped by the Cats defense, but a holding penalty gave the Vols new life with a fresh set of downs.

It’s been a steady built for Tennessee head coach Butch Jones during his time with the Vols. He’s built the roster from the ground up with great, bordering on elite, recruiting classes and the win-loss record has been reflective of the talent on the roster.
Tennessee had a dominate victory in the Outback Bowl over a hapless and clearly overrated Northwestern winning 45-6. This years game featured the Tennessee Volunteers against the Northwestern Wildcats.
Hurd injured his hamstring earlier this week at practice, going down in the open field after sprinting, Jones said.
The Vols mounted an impressive answer – with a jump-start from the Wildcats. So they are a play or two in each game from possibly being undefeated.
Tennessee won’t waltz right to Atlanta to play in the SEC Championship Game because they still have a decade-long losing streak to the Florida Gators that needs to be snapped, but the Gators aren’t world-beaters and have a massive question mark at quarterback with the departure of Will Grier.
“Absolutely”, Hurd said when asked if he’s aware that the title game will be in Tampa next year.
The Vols (9-4) won their fifth straight game to close the season.
The offense next season will have one of the SEC’s most experienced quarterbacks in Dobbs and an all-SEC candidate running back in Jalen Hurd, the Outback Bowl MVP. The Volunteers are 2-1 in previous trips to the Outback Bowl.
After Zack Oliver entered in relief of Thorson and promptly threw an interception of his own, Tennessee added a late touchdown with backups in the game, bringing the score to 38-6, and another Oliver interception was taken back for a touchdown in the game’s final minute, making it 45-6.
“Let’s not kid ourselves now: We played two very good football teams”, Fitzgerald said. “There was nothing that was going to stop me from playing”.
“They had some really nice little wrinkles that they attacked our defense with, so you’ve got to tip your cap to their coaching staff”, Fitzgerald said. “Our up-tempo exhausted them down, my offensive line was awesome and we fought hard the whole game”.
Two plays later, senior defensive back Brian Randolph picked off Thorson. “But where we’ve come in three short years is awesome”.
“They were so well-coached, I mean they knew where the play was gonna go, [Northwestern] couldn’t get the play extended to the outside, I mean they were on it”, fan Joey Ruzzene says.
Hurd looked fine on Friday, running hog wild against the Wildcats, especially in the second half. Northwestern’s quarterbacks went a combined 14-of-33 passing for 129 yards yards and four interceptions. Defensive end Derek Barnes could make things tough on the Wildcats in this one, as he has shown an knack for getting into the backfield with nine sacks this season. Each of his receptions came during a touchdown drive.

Hurd ran 24 times for 130 yards and a touchdown, and he only increased his per-carry average as he wore down that elite Northwestern rush defense in the second half.
