Oakland International Airport will beef up its international offerings yet again as it introduces two new flights to Europe, including the Bay Area’s first nonstop route to Spain. The others are Paris; London; Oslo, Norway; Copenhagen, Denmark; and Stockholm.

New twice-weekly nonstop service between Fort Lauderdale and Barcelona El Prat Airport will start on August 22, Norwegian said in a press release. Flights from Oakland International to Barcelona will launch on June 7, 2017, and initially operate twice weekly until the end of August, from when it will operate three times a week.

Launch fares for economy passengers start at $189 one-way from Fort Lauderdale and New York City, and at $199 one-way from Los Angeles and Oakland. FLL-Barcelona flights will launch August 22, 2017, and operate twice weekly.

In a statement, Norwegian’s chief commercial officer Thomas Ramdahl called continued USA expansion “key to Norwegian’s global strategy” and said the airline is excited to offer more affordable non-stop fares to European destinations. The carrier offers a total 44 routes from the USA, 37 of which are to Europe and seven to the French Caribbean. Launch fares to Copenhagen from Oakland start at $179 one-way, including taxes. Just go to the Norwegian website and select a travel date after June 5, 2017 to find these prices.

Current one-way fares for Norwegian’s premium cabin-with amenities that include priority boarding, sleeper seats, lounge access, and additional luggage allowance-start at $649 from NY and $849 from Los Angeles or Oakland.

The new Barcelona routes are open for booking at Norwegian.com/us.

In all, the airline operates 44 routes from the USA, 37 of which are to Europe and seven to the French Caribbean. Upcoming routes from the US include Las Vegas to London launching on October 31; Las Vegas to Oslo launching on November 1; and Fort Lauderdale to Guadeloupe launching on December 17.

Norwegian operates one of the world’s youngest fleets comprised of brand new Boeing 787 Dreamliners. As a low-priced airline, Norwegian charges for its slightly complicated baggage policy-for checked and carry-on luggage-as well as for seat reservations and meals on board.

The Oakland airport has been expanding its worldwide routes lately, many of which come from Norwegian. Airlines like Norwegian, Wow Airlines and others, which are known as “ultra low-cost” flights, have gained popularity in recent years for both short and long-haul flights.
