Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal will watch and support Arsenal today when the Gunners face Manchester City.

United were without Anthony Martial at Carrow Road after the striker felt a twinge in his knee in the warm up and Van Gaal was not prepared to risk the Frenchman.

Elsewhere, West Brom played a 1-1 draw with Bournemouth while Newcastle couldn’t take advantage of Norwich’s loss as their game against relegated Aston Villa ended in a goalless draw.

In attack, Rooney, Memphis Depay and Jesse Lingard failed to inspire, while Mata and Ander Herrera were industrious and at the heart of most of United’s better football.

The win left the Reds just a point off their cross-town rivals who play Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.

Manchester United won the match 1-0.

“There doesn’t seem to be that kind of feel [to United] at the moment, it’s more like “No, we can beat this team”, United don’t have that scare factor”.

“They are not really playing with the flamboyance you’d expect of a Manchester United team”, Sheringham told Sky Sports.

Wins away from home in the Premier League can he hard to come by, not least against teams at the wrong end of the table in the final weeks of the season.

Van Gaal has been openly critical of Scholes for questioning his judgement in recent months, but he didn’t hold back again in his role as a BT Sport pundit.

United could still secure the top four spot as they are now on 63points, one adrift of the Citizens.

Ryan Giggs will reportedly quit Manchester United this summer if the club opt to appoint Jose Mourinho as Louis van Gaal’s successor. There was an improvement in the second half, but the first half was one of the most unimpressive in a season in which that title is hotly contested.

For 72 minutes, Wayne Rooney’s enforced return as a centre-forward hadn’t gone well.

United next heads on Tuesday to West Ham, which was beaten by Swansea 4-1 in the penultimate game at Upton Park before the east London club moves into the Olympic Stadium.

Alex Neil turned to five-goal top scorer Dieumerci Mbokani in an attempt to make a telling difference, and the substitute striker very almost did just that when meeting a cross which he headed into the hands of De Gea.
