Nothing broken: Red Sox, David Ortiz survive potentially devastating night

Alex Rodriguez will make his final appearance at Fenway Park and has a chance to lead the New York Yankees to a series win when they visit the Boston Red Sox in the finale of a three-game set on Thursday.

The Red Sox slugger fouled a 99-mph pitch from Yankees reliever Dellin Bentances off his shin and knelt on the ground in pain before being helped off the field by manager John Farrell and a trainer.

Ortiz crumpled to the ground after fouling a 99 miles per hour fastball from New York Yankees closer Dellin Betances off the middle of his right shin. Ian Browne of MLB.com reported that “X-rays were negative and Ortiz is day to day”.

“I feel much better that he’s OK, no question”, Dombrowski said, speaking for an entire organization. The 23-year-old is 0-2 in his last four starts and was knocked out of Saturday’s game against the Dodgers in the fifth inning while being charged with three runs on eight hits and a walk. In the final season of his career, Ortiz, 40, leads the league with 36 doubles, 61 extra-base hits and a 1.012 OPS.

Alex Rodriguez was greeted with boos from the Fenway fans when he entered as a pinch-hitter for Aaron Hicks with two on and nobody out in the seventh, but flied out to right field. And because Wright is dealing with inflammation, not more sinister issues with his rotator cuff or labrum, the Red Sox are hopeful he will miss only a start or two and avoid the disabled list.

Tyler Clippard (1-0) pitched one inning for his first victory with the Yankees since being acquired from Arizona last week.

Yankees starter Nathan Eovaldi has been removed after one inning from a game against the Red Sox with right elbow discomfort.

Fernando Abad (1-6), another Boston trade-deadline acquisition, took the loss after surrendering Castro’s double.

The team says he will be sent to NY for further examination.

Rodriguez was held out of the starting lineup for the first two games of the series, a move that Yankees manager Joe Giradi defended before Wednesday’s game despite his earlier comments that Rodriguez would dictate his playing time this week. “My job description is to try and win every game and put everyone in the best possible position, and that’s what I’m trying to do”.

Red Sox: OF Chris Young (strained right hamstring) is scheduled to start a rehab assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket. Farrell said he’d “probably have a minimum of 20, 25 at-bats.”…

Eduardo Rodriguez (2-5, 5.93 ERA) will start in Wright’s place. Wright was injured Sunday night in Los Angeles when he pinch ran for Ortiz and jammed his shoulder while diving to second base on a fake pickoff attempt.
