Notre Dame boots Max Redfield, suspends Devin Butler
A Fulton County Jail spokesperson said the five players arrested there all posted bonds ranging between $300 and $500. – Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly announced Sunday that he had dismissed starting safety Max Redfield and suspended cornerback Devin Butler indefinitely after both were arrested in separate incidents in IN over the weekend. St. Joseph County prosecutor Kenneth P. Cotter is asking the court for additional time to investigate and determine whether formal charges should be brought against Butler.

Devin Butler, identified as a cornerback on the nationally ranked team, was arrested early Saturday morning on suspicion of battery and resisting law enforcement, both felonies, after a fight at a bar in South Bend, the St. Joseph County Police Department said.
Ashton White and Te’Von Coney were all in a 2007 Ford Focus (White was driving) when it was pulled over by Indiana State Troopers on US 31 in Rochester at 10:07 pm for speeding (73 miles per hour in a 60 miles per hour zone) and an improper taillight. They remain with the football team, per Kelly’s statement, but will be subject to disciplinary measures “internal to the football program”. He said the players’ conduct fell short of what the university expects from those who represent the team.
Though he has not dismissed the other four players from the team, Kelly said their status may change in light of legal or University judgments.
Butler attacked a policeman in South Bend, and officers used a stun gun to subdue the cornerback, an affidavit says. These were the expected charges following Butler’s altercation with law enforcement outside of the Linebacker Lounge over the weekend.
The university confirmed all five arrested are football players: Ashton White, Max Redfield, Kevin Stepherson Jr., Dexter Williams and Te’von Coney.
Redfield was slotted to be a starting safety for Notre Dame this year, while Williams was a third-string running back. All five face a misdemeanor charge for possession. Redfield and two other players in the auto also face a misdemeanor charge for possession of an unlicensed handgun.
Butler cursed at the officers and caused injuries to Knepper before Butler was subdued with a taser, the affidavit said.
Redfield, a senior safety, was one of six Irish football players arrested over the weekend in two separate incidents.
No. 10 Notre Dame, per the newly released preseason Associated Press poll, kicks off the season on September 4th at Texas.
Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said in June that Butler would miss the beginning of the season with a broken left foot and could be out until October.

The players charged with misdemeanors can continue on at Notre Dame.
