Notre Dame dismisses Max Redfield, suspends Devin Butler

Five of Butler’s teammates were arrested during a separate traffic stop, when marijuana and a loaded handgun were found inside their auto, reports The Associated Press. They were stopped by an IN state trooper around 10:07 p.m. Officer Ben Reason reported he smelled the presence of marijuana during the traffic stop, and a narcotics-detecting dog found marijuana IN the vehicle.

Last night, my brother and I felt compelled to record our initial reactions to the two separate incidents which resulted in six Notre Dame player arrests, as reported early Saturday morning.

Kelly said he made the decisions after meeting with all six players and talking with team leaders. He said the players’ conduct fell short of what the university expects from those who represent the team.

The St. Joseph County Jail booking desk confirmed Butler was arrested by the South Bend Police Department early Saturday morning on those two preliminary charges.

Redfield, Coney, White, Williams and Stepherson were arrested on Friday night just after 10 p.m.

Perhaps Notre Dame should have told their players that the M in team doesn’t stand for “marijuana arrest”. One player is accused of punching a cop outside a bar following fight, and five others face charges for marijuana and gun possession.

Kelly added that the status of the players with the university and the football team can be impacted by the justice system and the university’s discipline.

“At Notre Dame, where we place so much importance on the integration of students who are athletes into the broader university, the primary responsibility for discipline lies, as it should, with the University’s Office of Community Standards”.

Redfield was a starter at safety the last two seasons and was the Irish’s fourth-leading tackler in 2015 with 64 total tackles, and he had one interception. Fulton County is approximately 45 miles south of Notre Dame.

Butler, a senior at Notre Dame, was arrested and charged with battery to law enforcement and resisting law enforcement, per Matt Fortuna of ESPN.com. He was expected to start again in 2016.

The Notre Dame team, ranked No. 9 in ESPN’s preseason college football poll, completed training camp on Friday in preparation for its September 4 opening game at the University of Texas.

“Any student arrested on a felony charge also faces dismissal from the university”, Browne said.
