Notre Dame football players arrested on drug, gun charges
Five Notre Dame football players were arrested Friday night after an Indiana State Police trooper reported finding a loaded handgun and marijuana in the auto. During the stop, the officer detected the smell of marijuana and after a narcotics dog indicated the presence of drugs, the vehicle was subsequently searched and marijuana and a handgun were discovered.

They are Ashton White, Max Redfield, Kevin Stepherson Jr., Dexter Williams and Te’von Coney.
All remain jailed on a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge.
Redfield, Stepherson and Williams also were charged with possession of a handgun without a license, even though police only found one handgun in the vehicle.
Details are scarce, but cornerback Devin Butler was arrested around 1 a.m.at the popular Linebacker Lounge bar near campus on battery of law enforcement and resisting arrest, according to The Observer student newspaper, which first reported these incidents.
Butler was arrested by the South Bend Police Department on those two preliminary charges.
Notre Dame’s football season is right around the corner, but it appears the Fighting Irish have other problems to worry about.
Coach Bryan Kelly recently raved about Redfield, telling Scott DeCamp of MLive.com his senior safety was playing at an “elite level”, lauding a newfound level of consistency on the field.
Sophomore Williams is a part of ND’s projected three-man running back rotation.
Stepherson, an early-enrollee freshman, was expected to see action this season at receiver.
Coney, 19, of West Palm Beach, Fla., has been working in the linebacker rotation. The senior does have starting experience but was expected to compete for a backup position when he returned.
The Irish have not announced any additional discipline for these players.
