Notre Dame players arrested; police find gun, marijuana in car

The players were stopped by the trooper in Fulton County – which is about 50 miles outside of South Bend – for driving 73 mph in a 60-mph zone, according to police.

The ISP report indicates that while the trooper was speaking with White, who was the driver of the vehicle, the trooper allegedly smelled marijuana in the auto. The dog alerted the officers to illegal narcotics, which led to the officers finding marijuana and a handgun.

The vehicle carrying the five Irish players was stopped by ISP trooper Ben Reason at roughly 10:07 p.m. Friday, according to ISP. Floyd Redfield, 21, of Mission Viejo, California; Kevin Stepherson Jr., 18, of Jacksonville, Florida; and Dexter Williams, 19, of Winter Garden, Florida, are facing additional charges for possession of a handgun without a license.

Of those five players, Redfield is perhaps the most notable.

His arrest came shortly after five of his teammates were booked into jail for marijuana possession.

As of 11 a.m. Saturday morning, Butler was still being held at the St. Joseph County Jail, according to online jail records.

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly was not immediately available for comment.

Butler was expected to compete for a starting job at cornerback for 2016 but in June, he re-fractured the same foot he had repaired back in January when he was injured before the Fiesta Bowl.

“The university will determine if additional sanctions should apply to any or all of the students charged”, his statement said. Sophomore Ashton White and freshmen Julian Love, Donte Vaughn and Troy Pride Jr. also are vying for action at nickel or corner. He has had no other incidents that we know of while at Notre Dame, but none of that may matter with Notre Dame’s student code of conduct known as Res Life and du Lac.
