Safety Max Redfield, linebacker Te’Von Coney, wide receiver Kevin Stepherson, running back Dexter Williams and defensive back Ashton White were stopped by police for speeding Saturday night before an officer allegedly smelled marijuana and used a drug-sniffing dog to find marijuana and loaded handguns, according to the Associated Press.

He faces charges of battery against a police officer and resisting law enforcement. “That process has only served to deepen my disappointment in the poor decisions made by these young men”. He said the players’ conduct fell short of what the university expects from those who represent the team. “At Notre Dame, where we place so much importance on the integration of students who are athletes into the broader university, the primary responsibility for discipline lies, as it should, with the University’s Office of Community Standards”.

The affidavit says Butler tackled an officer to the ground, punched him several times in the side and stomach and pulled off his duty belt.

But Prosecutor Kenneth P. Cotter said in a statement Saturday that he’s seeking court approval for additional time to investigate the case so that his office can “determine whether formal charges are appropriate”.

ROCHESTER, Ind. (AP) – Five Notre Dame football players were arrested after Indiana State Police said a trooper found marijuana and a loaded handgun in their vehicle, while a sixth player was arrested in a separate incident and accused of punching a police officer. All five were charged with marijuana possession.

All five players in the auto were held in the Fulton County Jail to face a misdemeanor charge for possession of marijuana.

It was not known if any of the six have hired attorneys.

For Redfield, it marks the end of a disappointing tenure at Notre Dame.

WNDU reports Butler was expected to miss the beginning of the season while recovering from foot surgery. But Kelly said recently that Redfield had been playing at an “elite level” in August, saying he looked like “that guy everyone was hoping for out of high school”.

Redfield, who was expected to start for Notre Dame this season, was suspended for last season’s Fiesta Bowl due to a violation of team rules.
