Notting Hill Carnival 2016 Family Day Blighted By Stabbings And Arrests

It is celebrated over Sunday and Monday, which is celebrated as a “Summer Bank Holiday” in the United Kingdom, and is believed to attract around 1 million people as West Indies origin Britons come together for the celebrations.

The Mayor of London has been urged to launch a wide-ranging review into the future of the Notting Hill Carnival, after the local MP said the event risked turning into a “crime fest”, and police chiefs complained it had become unsafe for officers. The 15-year-old was critically injured, and remains in serious condition.

The Notting Hill Carnival is the largest street festival in Europe and originated in 1964 as a way for Afro-Caribbean communities to celebrate their own cultures and traditions.

Sunday’s festivities included a colourful child-oriented parade through west London that attracted tens of thousands of revellers, many of whom danced in the streets to the sound of steel drums and reggae bands. Medical beds were deployed at roadsides in some locations.

The Notting Hill Carnival has taken place every year since 1966.

Police said there were four incidents involving people being stabbed.

Police say there has been four alleged sexual offences arrests, 74 drug related arrests and 24 arrests for carrying a knife.

This year police have deployed a 7000-strong force to keep the peace.

One man is fighting for his life while three other victims, including at least two men, were also taken to hospital.
