The latest figures from Scotland Yard on Tuesday showed that of the 454 people arrested on Sunday and Monday, 25 were held for assaulting police.

Met Police Carnival spokeswoman Superintendent Robyn Williams said: “The technology involves the use of overt cameras which scan the faces of those passing by and flag up potential matches against a database of custody images”.

London Ambulance Service treated 1,005 patients at the Bank Holiday procession, mostly for alcohol-related injuries and illness.

A 16-year-old boy and a 15-year-old boy were at the scene having suffered stab wounds.

Minutes after the first incident, officers were called to reports of another stabbing on Portobello Road, and within the hour two more men were taken to hospital following a double stabbing on Ladbroke Grove.

The Metropolitan Police reported at least four knife attacks during the opening day of the two-day festival in west London.

A million revellers descended on the streets of London to watch the carnival on Sunday – what is known as the carnival’s “Children’s Day”.

The three teens along with a 20-year-old man, who was also stabbed, were taken to hospital in a critical condition which was later deemed to be non-life threatening.

Two were arrested after the weapon, which fires barbs attached by wires to batteries in order to temporarily paralyse people, was confiscated by officers.

The carnival traces its roots back to Caribbean music festivals in the 1950s after the first surge in arrivals from former British colonies after World War II.

They estimate that the canister can fill 2,250 small canisters and has a street value of £150,000.

Colette Ford from Salisbury was among those taking part in the carnival.

Carnival will continue tomorrow with its Grand Finale day. Dressed in an elaborate Dominator costume which cost £170 to match a 50 Shades Of Paradise float, she said: “It’s a lovely awesome atmosphere to be part of a truck”. This was up nearly 20 per cent on past year.
