Novak Djokovic in tears after early Olympic exit

In a tournament that began without half of the members of the ATP’s top 10 – including Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka – del Potro is suddenly looking like someone who might be able to add another medal to the bronze he took home from the 2012 London Olympics.

The New Zealand men’s doubles pairing of Marcus Daniell and Michael Venus lost their first round Olympic match 6-4,3-6,6-7 against Canada in Rio.

Del Potro is an injury prone Tennis players as he just recovered from a wrist injury and now he beat the No 1.

“Tonight I played one of the best matches of my career”.

Djokovic’s 7-6, 7-6 defeat by Del Potro has increased Murray’s chances of retaining his crown but the British No1 said: “I didn’t see Novak’s match but that is obviously a surprise”. It’s not the first or the last time that I have lost a tennis match.

He said: “Delpo was the better player and he just deserved to win”.

It will be interesting to see how far the 2009 US Open victor will go in Rio.

Del Potro, 27, has been as high as No. 4 in the world and won the 2009 U.S. Open, but struggled with wrist injuries throughout his career.

A commentator noted late in the first set – as the World No. 1 men’s singles player was tied with del Potro – that both Djokovic and del Potro were all smiles. While Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal progressed in the singles with easy wins, the top-ranked Novak Djokovic was not as lucky, losing out to a resurgent Juan Martin del Potro. And when he was asked about this win, h told the media wing that ” awesome, amazing match for me. Djokovic was eliminated in the first round by Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro. Del Potro will now face Joao Sousa of Portugal on Monday, 8 August.

Venus, a seven-time Grand Slam title victor and the 2000 Olympic champion, said she and Serena will now focus on the US Open later this month.

That still resulted in a title in Toronto, but it was an unconvincing one, and he was there for the taking, especially for a red-hot Del Potro. Defending Olympic champions Bob and Mike Bryan have chosen to sit out the Olympic Games this time around, with many considering the Davis Cup winning Murray brothers combine strong contenders for gold.

Murray had won all seven of his previous matches against Troicki and immediately hit back with a break of his own after dropping his first service game.
