Meanwhile, world number one Novak Djokovic said that every tournament was missing Federer while describing the Swiss maestro as “one of the most popular players of all time, one of the most successful players of all time”.

Opening the first night session of the tournament, Djokovic and Janowicz had to wait for the conclusion of a lavish ceremony to unveil the stadium’s new United States dollars 150million roof, before it was their turn to play.
“I mean, still the draw is 128”, Djokovic said.
Djokovic is scheduled for a second round matchup against Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic, who took five sets to dispose of Saketh Mynei of India in his first round matchup.
Djokovic arrived at Flushing Meadows with a niggling wrist problem and he was also struggling with an arm injury during Monday’s first-round win over Jerzy Janowicz.
Vesely upset Djokovic on clay at Monte Carlo 4 1/2 months ago when the No. 1-ranked Serb was seemingly at the top of his game.
The 21-year-old Brit won 6-2 6-2 6-3 on Monday against the 2013 US Open semi-finalist.
“I’m very, very disappointed right now”, said 23-year-old Vesely.
Andy Murray remains no match against Serbian rival Novak Djokovic in the nearing US Open 2016, noted John and Patrick McEnroe. Vesely and Andrey Kuznetsov were even at 5-5 in the first set of his third match in Winston-Salem when he stopped. He had played in two previous Grand Slam tournaments, losing in the first round both times.
“This is a big win for me”.
“The most important thing is that I am here in NY”.
Nadal, meantime, has been bothered by the wrist since withdrawing before the third round at the French Open, a tournament he has won nine times. I hope that I’ll feel overall good so I’m able to perform at my best for the next match’.
After a medical timeout, the Briton dropped the set before heading off on a lengthy toilet break which did little to help her opponent’s composure.
Normal service was resumed in the third and Djokovic moved in for the knockout punch, breaking Janowicz to open the fourth before wrapping up the match. “But I would certainly buy stock in him right now, for sure”.
But the French Open champion needed courtside treatment from a doctor after dropping the first set.
Rafael Nadal, of Spain, serves to Denis Istomin, of Uzbekistan, during the first round of the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Monday, Aug. 29, 2016, in NY.
The Flushing Meadows complex was showcasing its gleaming $600 million refit which includes a retractable roof over Arthur Ashe and a brand new Grandstand court.
Kvitova, the 14th seeded Czech who recorded her best performance in NY 12 months ago when she made the last-eight, beat Turkey’s Cagla Buyukakcay 7-6 (7/2), 6-3.
Early winners in the men’s event were South Africa’s Kevin Anderson who saw off Canada’s Vasek Pospisil 7-6 (7/3), 6-4, 6-4.
Asked about playing an opponent who defeated him in their only meeting, he ticked off all the reasons that might not be relevant: “Different surface, different circumstances, best-of-five”.
Isner came from two sets down to triumph 3-6 4-6 7-6 (7/5) 6-2 7-6 (7/3). He went down to 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 to British Kyle Edmund.

Also on Ashe on Wednesday and also nursing a left wrist injury is fourth-seeded Rafael Nadal, who faces Andreas Seppi.
