Novak Djokovic, Stan Wawrinka to meet in US Open final
‘It was a odd match, as it always is, when you play Gaël, who is very unpredictable player.

Kei Nishikori, of Japan, reacts after losing a point to Stan Wawrinka, of Switzerland, during the semifinals of the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Friday, Sept. 9, 2016, in NY.
In 2014 at the US Open, he threw away a two sets to love lead and two match points to lose to Roger Federer in the quarter-finals.
Djokovic will now take on Stan Wawrinka in the US Open final after Wawrinka won his semifinal match against Japan’s Kei Nishikori.
“I had phases when I was entertained by what he’s doing and phases where I was upset with myself for allowing him to do whatever he does to disturb my game and my rhythm”, said Djokovic.
That describes his career, too.
He will seek his third major championship Sunday against the top-ranked Djokovic, who he defeated at Roland Garros in 2015.
In a odd match that didn’t reach the heights expected of a grand slam semi, the world No. 1 eventually did enough to best the Frenchman in four sets 6-3 6-2 3-6 6-2 and book his place in the final where he’ll play either Stanislas Wawrinka or Kei Nishikori.
Monfils says what McEnroe – a seven-time Grand Slam titlist – saw as a lack of effort was actually an attempt to change up his strategy and give Djokovic another look. Wawrinka needed to save a match point in the third round against 64th-ranked Dan Evans before prevailing in five sets. “He got exhausted and I started to be more aggressive”.
Nishikori came into Friday’s match with an eye-popping 5-0 record against top-10 players at the U.S. Open, the only Grand Slam at which he has made the semis.
Nishikori had reached the final in NY in 2014 where he lost to Marin Cilic.
After defeating Monfils, Djokovic has played only 13 sets, and a total of 118 games. But with Wawrinka saving six straight break points during one stretch in the second set, Nishikori’s legs started to go. Monfils, now 0-13 against Djokovic, spent most of his news conference defending his unusual approach and said he knew beforehand he might try it. Nishikori had trying to ride out the pain that had come from spending far too many tournament hours on court.
It proved a decisive blow for Nishikori, who was now hobbling with cramp, and Wawrinka showed no mercy as he broke three times in the fourth to seal victory in three hours and eight minutes.
“You know, sometimes, as his opponent it’s not easy to handle his up and downs but he’s a very important asset to our sport”.
Nishikori was flexing his legs between points, trudging slowly to his chair on changeovers.
On Saturday, Monfils was leaning over and using his racket like a cane for support between points in the third and fourth sets. But he just didn’t have enough left to pull ahead and couldn’t take advantage of enough openings on Wawrinka’s serve.
After saving a bevy of break points, he broke in the 12th game to level the match at two sets apiece.
“When you change, you change with what you got”, Monfils said. “That was the biggest mistake”.
Arthur Ashe Stadium’s retractable roof is being closed because of rain during the third set of the U.S. Open semifinal between No. 3 Stan Wawrinka and No. 6 Kei Nishikori. Against Murray, that seemed to swing momentum toward Nishikori, making the conditions more favorable for his game.

“I’m very sad to hear that”, Monfils told reporters after hearing of McEnroe’s criticism of him. I was feeling uncomfortable on the court. “I would like to say congrats to Serena, you really deserved your title, you’re a great person, a great champion”, Kerber said in the on-court interview.
