United States put the stipulation, which permit only the NPT signatories to this elite club of the NPT.

However, countries that supported India’s entry were the US, France, the UK, Mexico and Japan, among others.

Swarup said that though India did not get “expected results” at the Seoul meeting, the country will continue to make determined efforts to get into NSG.

There are some processes which take longer, I’d evaluate the NSG membership process in that category, MEA spokesperson Vikas Swarup said.

Jun 26, 2016- India’s bid to join the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) has suffered a setback following Chinese opposition.

Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar is in Seoul as part of India’s diplomatic outreach to push through the NSG. He has been asked to stay in New Delhi to craft India’s response to the results of the Brexit referendum as Britain decides Friday whether to exit or stay on in the EU. However, Pakistan’s NSG bid was not discussed at length, however the presence of the application was the reason for a lot of discussion on countries.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the issue on Thursday at a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at a regional summit in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, but there was no breakthrough.

Others said that China had been not alone in its opposition. He also stated that most of the meeting was devoted to the NSG issue.

“China wants two things; we must abide by the rules of NSG because these kind of rules are not directed against any specific country”. Decision on allowing membership to any country has to be made by consensus.

“We are highly disappointed by the outcome of the NSG plenary at Seoul”. Paragraph 1 (a) of the September 2008 decision states that the decision on India contributes to the “widest possible implementation of the provisions and objectives of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons”.

The Centre has been on the opposition’s radar over the failed attempt for membership in the NSG, which called it as a diplomacy failure of the Modi government. India is not a NPT country. Energy-starved India has set for itself an ambitious goal of sourcing 40% of its power from non-fossil sources and is relying heavily on nuclear energy to meet the target. Indian entry will be very serious for Pakistan, touching “raw nerve” and equally risky for China.
