Philip and Marshall Cabe were on board after a small plane crashed Monday morning just outside Port Allen Airport in Kauai. He said it seemed to sputter and then cut out, and the plane appeared to turn back to the airport, but the engine caught fire.
The National Transportation Safety Board and FAA will investigate the cause of the crash.
The single-engine aircraft crashed about 30 yards from Makaha Beach Park, said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. David Jenkins.
The group was with the company SkyDive Kauai, the news site reported.
The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed the crash occurred, but under unknown circumstances.
One occupant was taken to a nearby hospital.
A few hours later, another small plane crashed into the water off the coast of Oahu.
Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvalho said his thoughts were with the victims and their families.
Around 11:20 a.m. a lifeguard noticed a plane halfway submerged in the water in Charlie’s Reef, Honolulu Emergency Services spokesperson Shayne Enright said.
According to the NTSB, the pilot was not familiar with the aircraft, and the plane suffered a hard landing.
