Number of Smokers in England Drops To Record Low
Professor Debra Lapthorne, centre director for Public Health England South West, said: “While we know that quitting smoking is not easy, this Stoptober is a ideal time to try again”. This is estimated to have helped over 500,000 smokers to quit smoking past year.

In England there are now twice as many ex-smokers (14.6 million people) as current smokers (7.2 million).
Northumberland NHS Stop Smoking Services manager, Brenda Warner, says signing up for the Stoptober challenge is a good way for people to kick the habit, adding: “People can often make several attempts to go smoke free, but taking the first step is what’s important and getting the right help to do so means that people are more likely to be successful”.
The American Lung Association says 480,000 people in the United States die from tobacco related causes each year, making it the number one cause of preventable death in the country.
“Quitters will soon see they have reduced blood pressure, easier breathing and better circulation”.
For more information, search “Stoptober” online and choose the package of support that will help you quit for good, including details of your local stop smoking services.
The Government’s deputy chief medical officer, Dr Gina Radford, added: “While we know that quitting smoking is not easy, this Stoptober is a ideal time to try again”.
This increase in successful stop smoking attempts reflects the high number of people using quitting aids across England. “There is more help and support available now than ever before”.
“Even if you have tried quitting before like me and failed, just give it another go and keep trying. You’re up to 10 times more likely to quit with help, so get the support you need”.
According to experts, taking a complete break from cigarettes for at least 28 days greatly increases the odds of being able to kick the smoking habit for life.
Dr Gina Radford, deputy chief medical officer, said: “While we know that quitting smoking is not easy, this Stoptober is a flawless time to try again”.
