Nvidia’s insanely powerful new graphics cards bring VR to laptops
The chips are called the GeForce GTX 10 Series GPUs (graphics processing units). The lower clockspeed is one of the reasons for the GTX 1070 having more cores in its configuration. They’re almost identical to their desktop counterparts, with only a slightly slower base clock speed on the GTX 1060 when it’s inside a notebook.

“This round of NVIDIA’s mobile GPUs aren’t “gimped out” in comparison its desktop discrete GPU lineup, in that the SKUs don’t feature fewer CUDA cores than their corresponding desktop counterparts”. The mid-range GTX 1060 has the same specs as its desktop version, with 1280 CUDA cores and 1670MHz boost, with 6GB of GDDR5 at 8GHz.
Nvidia first tried its hand at putting desktop-class graphics chips inside a notebook previous year, with its Maxwell-based GTX 980. That said, NVIDIA is allowing its partners to factory overclock its mobile cards, which is a very interseting development. And with the Dual-FET power supply and multi-phased power controllers, they offer more than 3x the overclocking potential, for even faster performance.
According to known details, the new Geforce GTX 1060 3GB will still based on the same GP106 GPU but come with one of the SM units disabled. Nvidia’s VR ready promise is also strictly limited to AC power, since the company can’t guarantee it on battery alone. We were treated to a live demo of Gears of War 4 (confirmed to support DX12, G-Sync, 4K and dynamic resolution), running on a giant 4K OLED TV, powered by a GTX 1080 notebook running at 4K on Ultra settings; hugely impressive, and it never skipped a beat.
The cheaper GeForce GTX 1070 was not far behind, with 103FPS average in Tomb Raider, 125FPS in Shadow of Mordor and 175FPS in BioShock Infinite. The company further says that the mobile GTX 1080 and 1070 will support SLI.
We’re just receiving the final versions of the drivers for the card, so we haven’t had time to run our full gamut of gaming tests, but rest assured we’re on it and hope to have results soon. NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 10-series GPUs leverage high-speed FinFET, high-bandwidth GDDR5X technologies and DirectX 12 to deliver the smoothest, most power-efficient gaming notebook experiences.
MSI’s new GT72 gaming notebook, powered by the GeForce GTX 1070 and rocking a handsome 17-inch 120Hz display with G-Sync enabled. When you’re talking about gaming notebooks with 4K screens attached to them that’s important.

The new 10-series GPUs can enable 120Hz gaming as well as 4K panels. Nvidia expects gaming notebook sales to increase by 30 percent this year while console sales growth stalls, and its new GTX 1000 series will clearly help boost some of those notebook sales later this year.

Nvidia’s new 10-series laptop GPUs offer unheard of graphics performance. Even the mid-tier GTX 1070’s performance is ready to exceed star of desktop performance from the previous generation.
