NWS confirms 5 tornadoes in Indiana Wednesday, including EF3 in Kokomo

The National Weather Service says four tornadoes touched down in one western OH county during a storm that moved across in and Ohio.

In Ohio, damage was reported in four counties, including Van Wert County, where officials said at least two tornadoes touched down about 2 miles apart, tearing roofs off homes and flattening barns.

The agency said Friday survey teams had confirmed weak EF0 tornadoes that caused little damage near the cities of Peru and Kokomo.

The weather service also says Indiana State Police observed a tornado northwest of the Montgomery County town of New Ross, or about 35 miles northwest of Indianapolis, and moving east.

People from across the area spent the day Thursday helping those affected by the storms. But players and coaches from both teams will volunteer for cleanup duties.

The central IN community of Kokomo was left reeling Wednesday afternoon after multiple tornadoes cut paths of destruction through town, smashing cars, demolishing houses and downing power lines.

Indianapolis Power & Light Co. says about 22,000 homes and businesses lost electricity, with the vast majority on the city’s north and northeast sides.

One was an EF3 with winds up to 165 mph that damaged and destroyed homes and business in the city of Kokomo, about 40 miles north of Indianapolis.

Tornadoes that touched down in central in tore roofs off apartment buildings, sent air conditioners falling onto parked cars and cut power to thousands of people, but left no one seriously injured.

A toppled Starbucks in Kokomo was among the buildings hit Wednesday.

Police officers in Indianapolis also spotted at least two funnel clouds close to the ground Wednesday just south of Interstate 70, according to officer Jim Gillespie of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. Power was knocked out to more than 36,000 homes.

Pence returned to his home state Wednesday evening.
