Before Christmas, a new federal security bulletin said there was “no information to indicate a specific, credible threat to or associated with the Times Square New Year’s Eve 2017 celebration in New York City”.
It was the very first New Year’s Eve celebration in New York City’s Times Square – a tradition that continues to draw enormous crowds more than 100 years later.
Pedestrians wishing to access Times Square will have to settle for carrying only small bags and passing through at least two security checks, where any objects deemed risky – including alcohol and even umbrellas – will be prohibited.
“I’m not. I’m really not, and I think that it’s important for people to just do their thing and not be afraid to go out and enjoy themselves”, said Cook.
The city also used sand-filled trucks at the Thanksgiving Day Parade.
People have gathered in large numbers to watch the ball drop event and wish one another Happy New Year. These are just some of the 65 sanitation trucks the NYPD is packing with sand. The security plan for the weekend includes much more than trucks, of course. “We can not predict how quickly the viewing areas will fill up”. “We will also deploy our full complement of explosive-detecting K-9s, both at the event and throughout our transit system”.

Saturday’s forecast calls for a high temperature of 44 degrees, which is expected to drop to 36 degrees as we head into the late evening, according to the National Weather Service. An article by Jennifer Fermino in the New York Daily News this week quoted New York Mayor Bill de Blasio who stated, “There will be no more iconic place to ring in 2017 than Times Square”. We’ll update this story if we can figure that one out.
