The Christmas warm-up follows a month of record-setting temperatures in November.
Courtney Spamer, an AccuWeather meteorologist, said the unseasonably warm temperatures can be blamed on jet streams coming from the south, where heat from the Gulf of Mexico isn’t allowing cool winds to settle in the north. Mike Halpert, deputy director at NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, said that the warm weather in the Eastern U.S. can not be tied to El Nino just yet. This air mass is bringing jacket-free weather to areas that are normally preparing for a white Christmas this time of year.
Temperatures are expected to reach at least 70 degrees from Florida to New England, covering more than 1,200 miles.
This latest warm weather record comes the day after breaking the all-time high for December 23rd.
Baltimore set three new temperature records on Christmas Eve and on its second-warmest Christmas Day on record, surging into the 70s both days and only cooling to 58 degrees. On Christmas Day, even Los Angeles (55 degrees) remained several degrees cooler than New York City (61 degrees). The warmest on record is 72 degrees set in 1964. It’s reported that some people were even playing volleyball in Central Park; something that is completely unheard of for winter in NY.
Buffalo, New York Taking advantage of the unseasonable weather, a kayaker paddles along the Buffalo River, Dec. 24, 2015, in Buffalo, N.Y. In more general terms, it defines a white Christmas as any December 25 that the Bootheel sees snow. There could be snow and ice from the Texas Panhandle north to Kansas and Missouri. Fort Lauderdale was 85 degrees.

Fall and winter have been very mild on the US East Coast so far this season, much to the dismay of stores selling coats, scarves and gloves. The National Weather Service warned that a narrow band of rain of thunderstorms capable of causing damaging winds in Oswego County and northern Cayuga County was possible.
