NY students fatally stabbed; distraught ex-boyfriend is called the killer

21-year-old Kelsey Annese and 24-year-old Matthew Hutchinson, two students who had been attending the State University of New York-College at Geneseo, were murdered by a former student who had previously dated Annese.

The Geneseo Police Department reported Sunday that three deaths had occurred in an off-campus residence in Geneseo, a town in western NY state, near Buffalo.

Police say the suspect in the Geneseo deaths killed his ex-girlfriend, another man and then himself early Sunday morning.

Szczesniak said Kingston was distraught over the recent breakup of a three-year relationship with Annese and had talked about suicide to several people though he had not made any threats.

In a press conference today, the police confirmed that incident was indeed a murder-suicide and added that Kingston had killed Amnese and Hutchinson with little resistance, as there was no sign of forced entry or a struggle.

Kingston had called his father after killing his ex-girlfriend and the father, who has not been named, contacted the police.

According to Szczesniak, friends last saw Kingston at a local bar around 8 or 9 p.m. on Saturday.

“All three individuals succumbed to injuries from stab wounds”, said Jeffrey Szczesniak, the public information officer for the Geneseo police department.

Annese’s apartment was at the top of a large rental house.

None of those involved had a police record.

SUNY Geneseo President Denise Battles says, “It’s a profoundly sad day for all of us at SUNY Geneseo and in the village as we begin to mourn these heartbreaking deaths”.

Hutchinson had played hockey since he was a child and wanted to be a firefighter after graduating.

Kingston, 24, of Geneseo, was a student at SUNY Geneseo until the spring of 2013.

The university said Monday both the men’s and women’s basketball games that were originally scheduled for Tuesday have been postponed. He had volunteered for more than three years at the Geneseo Fire Department, making a point to take every training opportunity despite his packed schedule as a student athlete, said fire chief Andrew Chanler.

The SUNY Geneseo website said the school was “in the planning stages of a remembrance event that will bring together the college community to support each other in this time of great sadness”.

“‘The Geneseo we know is a strong community”, Battles said.

Annese’s team profile indicates she wore number 32-the same number her father, Ron, wore when he played basketball at Geneseo. He was just one of those teammates or players that you just love to have on your team. “He was a guy who you’d say ‘wow, he is really making a difference in the world.’ He is an inspiration for taking on the things he did while going to school full time”. She also says a memorial will be held Wednesday evening on campus to remember those lost.
