NY to give critically ill faster access to medical marijuana

NY Governor Andrew Cuomo approved an expedited law to permit medical marijuana in the state.

Vireo Health says the event planned for Thursday afternoon in Perth, N.Y. will be the first legal harvest of marijuana in NY in more than a century.

“I deeply sympathize with New Yorkers suffering from serious illness and I appreciate that medical marijuana may alleviate their chronic pain and debilitating symptoms”, Cuomo wrote.

Under the state’s new law, patients with a qualifying condition can get permission from their doctor to obtain non-smokable forms of cannabis.

Cuomo said that program is on track to begin operating in January.

“There remains a real danger that many seriously ill patients will not be able to access medical marijuana and their conditions will deteriorate, potentially jeopardizing their lives”, Gottfried says.

A legislative representative from Sacramento gave the supervisors an overview of the state’s new laws, which are designed to create a system of oversight for the growth of marijuana in the state.

The signing comes less than two months before January 2016, when New York’s medical marijuana program is supposed to be up and running with licensed businesses selling the drug. The law compels the state must issue patient cards to qualified, critically ill patients as soon as possible, making it clear that they are medical marijuana patients and affording them a few protection from law enforcement and child protective services.

The Marin County Board of Supervisors moved ahead Tuesday with an ordinance to establish four medical marijuana dispensaries in unincorporated areas of the county. One anxious that adding more regulations for the city would burden the police department beyond what it could handle, two voiced outright opposition of medical marijuana in any fashion within city limits.
