He was in serious but stable condition at a local hospital, police said. He had 18 prior arrests and several felony convictions.

A U.S. Marshals task force had attempted to arrest Tyree, 38, for violating federal parole when smoke emerged from his girlfriend’s apartment, said Robert Boyce, New York Police Department chief of detectives. New York City Fire Department Lt. James Hayes, 53, went inside to respond to the smoke and spoke apparently to Tyree, who then stopped communicating.

Instead Tyree, a wanted high-ranking member of the Bloods street gang, fired his weapon at police, and was shot and killed in return.

Authorities surrounded the house at 15 Destiny Court after the gunman – identified as 38-year old Garland Tyree – continued shooting, sources said. A City Hall official said the mayor left the gym after about 80 minutes, shortly before 11 a.m. The standoff began at about 6 a.m. NY1 reported that de Blasio uncharacteristically left from a side exit, rather than the front.

Tyree wrote, “Today I die” on his Facebook profile early Friday morning.

Garland Tyree denied his involvement with Nine Trey Gangsters, despite having a “NTG” tattoo on his face. A police medic determined that Tyree was dead at the scene.

Authorities entered the apartment early Friday morning to find it filled with smoke, Bratton said.

Police said Tyree refused to let officers inside so they gained access using a key from Tyree’s neighbor. Hayes ran from the apartment, but once outside realized he had been shot twice – once in the buttocks and once in the ankle.

Members of his family and his girlfriend are also communicating with the police, Boyce said.

“I’m more a biography type of dude”, Tyree said last year in an interview hyping his company, Real Write Publishing LLC. Police went to his home on August 14 to serve him with a warrant for an allegedly probation violation.

But federal court documents portray Tyree as an influential member of the Bloods with a violent record.
