Uber also estimates that 600,000 trips are clocked within Queens each month.

“Multiple transportation options are a good thing, but they all need to be regulated by the government”, the mayor said. But that has clashed with entrenched and heavily regulated industries like taxis, who pay cities high fees for licenses to operate.

The council had been preparing to vote this week on a bill seeking to impose severe restrictions on Uber. Instead, the council members are expected to meet to talk about how to pursue the study.

Uber targeted officials, including Mayor Bill de Blasio, pictured above, in a political-style campaign to stop the city from capping the number of Uber cars in New York.

Cuomo called Uber “one of these great inventions, startups, of this new economy”. (The fake de Blasio feature has been removed.). It was brokered after Uber officials reached out to Shorris on Tuesday night, setting up a meeting with officials from the council and the mayor’s office the next day. “The cap legislation now before the City Council will be tabled throughout the traffic study process”. Taxicab representatives and city officers have said that Uber drivers aren’t subject to the same regulations as taxi drivers.

Josh Mohrer, Uber’s general manger in New York, said Uber welcomed the agreement.

Is Uber making New York City traffic worse?

De Blasio cited such issues as increased congestion and pollution for his proposals, which would include a traffic study to be completed in the next year showing the impact of ridesharing companies.

City Hall reached an agreement with Uber on Wednesday after an attempt to limit the rapid influx of its cars across the five boroughs, Manhattan in particular.

The mayor was blindsided by criticism from a furious Mark-Viverito, who objected to the mayor’s assertion that he still wielded the threat of a cap if Uber failed to cooperate during the study.

The mayor decided to stop campaigning against Uber after weeks of conflicts between the two.

Women in New York City have access to safe, reliable rides home for a few months longer. He said Uber travel is a more comfortable experience and believes the drivers are more courteous and polite because they are being rated by the customer.

Currently, Uber has 25,000 vehicles operating on their behalf, outnumbering the 13,000 traditional yellow taxis. In the past, Uber has been defiant about cooperating and handing over its data, but just this week, the company released its hourly ride numbers.

In fairness, Uber is right that the bill was something of a handout to the city’s powerful taxi lobby.
