Investigators were questioning the five occupants of the vehicle but none had been arrested, officials said. Officials listed 29 people as having been injured by the explosion.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said Monday that Rahami was the only suspect so far, and that there was every reason to believe the bombings were acts of terrorism.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo ordered 1,000 additional police officers and National Guard members to patrol New York streets after the Chelsea bombing, which authorities have so far not tied to global terrorism.

“A few blocks away they found a pressure cooker that looked like it was another bomb that maybe didn’t go off”.

Law enforcement had been examining a device near the Elizabeth train station. Nine people were injured Saturday before an off-duty policeman killed the alleged attacker, a Somali-American.

A pipe bomb also exploded Saturday in Seaside Park ahead of a charity race.

Saturday’s bombings and subsequent finds came just days before the annual General Assembly of the United Nations in NY.

“In the course of rendering one of the devices safe, it detonated”, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said, adding that nobody was injured.

Cuomo, appearing later on “Fox & Friends”, confirmed that authorities are seeking Ahmad Khan Rahami, 28, who is believed to be a US citizen of Afghan descent. This is a “low explosive”, like black powder used in old-fashioned weapons.

“It’s very unusual for a bomber to switch up devices”, said Anthony May, a retired Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) explosives investigator. The explosion left many rattled in a city that had marked the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks a week earlier.

The official, who wasn’t authorized to discuss an ongoing investigation by name, said the FBI was aware of the posting and was working to determine its authenticity.

It wasn’t immediately clear if authorities believed Rahami is the man seen on surveillance video at two locations were explosive devices were discovered in Manhattan following the Chelsea blast. “This is too loud”, Stanhope told The Associated Press.

The governor directed 1,000 additional state troopers and National Guard members to the New York City area Sunday.

Also on Sunday, two men reported seeing a suspicious backpack in a trash can near the Elizabeth train station on the NJ Transit/Amtrak Northeast Corridor line.

Federal authorities now believe that the explosion in Chelsea, where another explosive device was found nearby, was linked to as many as six explosive devices found just outside NY in Elizabeth, Homeland Security officials told Reuters.
