Authorities said two New York City Police Department officers and another man were shot in Brooklyn Saturday morning. He fled, but he didn’t make it far before smashing his vehicle into a patrol auto that had responded to the officers’ call for backup. Mallory Hoff has more on the officers: Yurkiw was shot in the protective vest, but the bullet did not penetrate it. He suffered blunt force trauma. Officials say both officers are stable and alert.

The shooting happened in the vicinity of Malcolm X Boulevard and Lexington Ave and police say a gun was recovered at the scene.

The suspect, Jamal Funes, 34, reportedly slammed his vehicle head-on into a patrol auto shortly after 3:00 a.m. before opening fire on the two officers, police said. When they approached the suspect he allegedly threatened them with a revolver and took off in a vehicle.

Yurkiw was shot in his bulletproof vest – 27 years after a vest saved his father, Officer Paul Yurkiw.

At that point officers fired at the armed suspect, striking him several times. The investigation is ongoing, the police said. Investigators are looking into his ties to other people suspected of being radicalized, a law enforcement official said.

Last month, Officer Sherrod Stuart was wounded in the ankle in what police later determined was a friendly-fire shooting as another officer exchanged gunfire with a suspect in a Bronx street brawl.

Both officers were hit during the shootout.

Funes was still in his auto when he was shot, Bratton said.
