NEW YORK (AP) – Investigators are trying to determine whether police fired any of the shots that injured two officers during a confrontation with an armed motorist who also was wounded, a spokeswoman for New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said Sunday. “The other will be out soon fully recovered”, deBlasio said. Both officers were taken to the hospital and are expected to surprise, a police spokesman told the Post. Funes pointed a gun at them, then fled in a vehicle, according to police. His condition was unknown, police said.

Two plainclothes NYPD officers were shot in a gunfight with a suspect, who was critically wounded, early Saturday in Brooklyn.

According to authorities, a total of about eight officers then confronted Funes and fired at him, striking him several times while he was still in his vehicle.

Officers from the 81st Precinct, the 83rd Precint, and PSA 3 commands responded to the call for assistance. “That they can pull a gun out, that they can shoot at police officers, that they can shoot our mothers or our kids, but we’re here to say we’re not tolerating that”, said Community Advocate Tony Herbert.

The incident started early on Saturday morning when two housing police officers heard a shot fired near a Brooklyn intersection.

No working phone number for Funes’ family could immediately be found. It’s unclear whether he has a lawyer who can comment.

The incident marks the second time this month that NYPD officers were shot on duty.

Funes’s record also includes 11 arrests in IL between 1996 and 2000. “These are very dedicated officers who were out there protecting us”.

The suspect is a 34-year-old who is believed to be from New Jersey. The other officer was struck below the vest.

Officer William Reddin is in Kings County Hospital with a gunshot wound to the hip, while Officer Andrew Yurkiw was spared when a bullet struck his bulletproof vest, CBS2’s Ilana Gold reports. Images released by police from surveillance video show the gunman – wearing an ankle-length, white garment – on a crosswalk taking aim and firing at the patrol vehicle at close range. The officers followed, and radioed for help.
