O’Sullivan helps Red Sox bounce back, beat Angels 10-5

Following his brutal performance for the Boston Red Sox in Saturday’s 21-3 loss to the Los Angeles Angels, Pat Light was on his way out of Beantown as the right-hander was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Rougned Odor hit a solo homer and two-run single for the Rangers, who have lost five of six.

The bottom club in American League West beat the East’s high flyers 21-2, the first time the Angels have hit the 20-run mark in a game since 2004.

“That was one of the highlights of my career for sure”, O’Sullivan said of the Fenway ovation after allowing three runs on four hits and three walks with two strikeouts.

Offense hasn’t been a problem for the Red Sox through 81 games, but Boston’s struggles on the mound are threatening to undo all the good the team is doing at the plate. “You have to turn the page and try and win the series tomorrow”.

Mookie Betts and Ortiz had three hits apiece for Boston.

Red Sox manager John Farrell addressed his job security Friday, telling reporters, including Ryan Hannable of WEEI, “We’ve come off a tough month”.

Albert Pujols homered and also had a five-RBI day.

Ramirez had three hits and Leon drove in three for the Red Sox, who took two of three from Los Angeles.

Nick Martinez (1-2) gave up six runs on 11 hits in 4 1/3 innings.

With Los Angles leading 4-0 in the fifth, Perez’s three-run double capped a five-run inning that broke it open. In the third, the Angels turned the hit and run on with one out and Jett Bandy at second. Travis Shaw then fired high to second for an error on a probable double-play grounder by Pujols, with the relay late to first.

Johnny Giavotella singled to re-load the bases before Perez cleared them with a double off the center-field wall. But it gave them a platform to launch from, and when Junichi Tazawa failed to avoid his own pair of doubles to go with an infield single, suddenly it was a two-run game.

Pujols is eight behind Mark McGwire for 10th on the career homer list. The call was reversed and the umpires put runners on second and third in the Angels’ two-run seventh. (1999 Baltimore Orioles), Edgardo Alfonzo (1999 New York Mets), Shawn Green (in a four-homer game for the 2002 Los Angeles Dodgers), Pena and Cron. Yunel Escobar began the game with an ill-advised attempt to reach second base after he singled, getting thrown out by five feet. He batted leadoff and went 1 for 4 before being lifted for a pinch runner.

As for the Red Sox, they just finished up against the Angels. Now more than ever they need the good part of their rotation to actually come through and pitch like it. Because with Texas coming through town, it’s too easy to see them failing to build on their good fortune and, at long last, today’s good play. When healthy, the plan is to shift him to relief and prepare him to work out of Boston’s bullpen. Price was 6-0 with a 1.90 ERA for nine starts on five days rest last season but is 2-2 with a 5.34 ERA for five starts with the extra rest this season.
