Obama announces new steps to reduce gun violence

It’s similar to “smart phone” technology and advocates believe it would prevent accidental shootings by children every year.

The president also has called for increased spending of up to $500 million on improved mental-health treatment facilities, and the Social Security Administration announced a proposed new rule Friday to ensure that “appropriate information” about those who have been treated for mental problems is available to government agencies checking the backgrounds of gun buyers.

Whether or not this push for smart gun technology is indeed a last ditch effort, the soon-to-be outgoing president faces virulent opposition when it comes to any changes in gun laws. The first, which had wide public support, would have expanded federal background checks and the other would have turned the “no-fly-list” into a no-gun-buy list.

The Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security are expected to complete the guidance in October, according to a new interagency report published Friday.

“The federal government has a unique opportunity to do so, as it is the single largest purchaser of firearms in the country”.

We’re basically within an accounting error of a recession, and President Obama is front and center on the New York Times website Thursday grumbling that he is not getting credit for fixing the economy.

He said because of Obama’s leadership, the USA “united the world” in imposing stringent sanctions on the Iranian government and on the Iranian economy that compelled them to come to the table and compelled them to agree to a diplomatic agreement that prevents them from obtaining a nuclear weapon and establishes a verification regime, inspections, that allow to verify that Iran has not developed a nuclear weapon and that they are actually abiding by the terms of the deal. “How people feel about the economy”, Obama told me, giving one part of his own theory, is influenced by “what they hear”.

President Barack Obama has granted an interview to the student newspaper at Rutgers University because the paper’s editor had the guts to ask for it. “That is just common sense”.

The Department of Justice has authorized agencies to apply certain federal grants to the purchase of smart guns.

“They sit down among themselves and decide what is best for law enforcement, but from a political standpoint”, Pasco said.

Next month, the White House will host a 50-state Gun Violence Prevention convention that will bring together state and local elected officials – including governors, attorneys general, state legislators, and city and county officials – who have been leaders in the fight to prevent gun-related deaths.

To incentivize gun manufacturers, the administration will open up its U.S. Army proving grounds in Aberdeen, Md., for trials and award cash prizes of $5,000 and $10,000 for manufacturers that pass light- and heavy-duty testing phases.

He said that only one company – Armatix of Germany – has smart guns ready for sale, “But there are quite a few potential manufacturers that are on the verge of producing the guns”.
