“When politicians insult Muslims… that doesn’t make us safer”, he said.

Arguably, the political stagnation in Washington which has dogged Obama’s years in office has created the bedrock for the anti-establishment Presidential campaigns of Cruz and Trump.

Republicans were largely dismissive of the president’s address.

Republican presidential front-runner Mr Trump recently called for a ban on Muslims entering the US.

Businessman Donald Trump, the GOP front-runner, said he was just plain bored.

The Republican response to the State of the Union address was delivered by Nikki Haley, the governor of SC.

Ms Haley called on Americans to resist the temptation “to follow the siren call of the angriest voices”.

Well, it was shorter than most of his State of the Unions, but not shorter than his first. He’s expected cast an optimistic vision for the future that builds on his two terms in office, while acknowledging that sweeping change has sparked anxieties for some citizens. “But if we give up now, then we forsake a better future”. Obama called for an end to Gerrymandering of election districts, a limit to the influence of big money in politics, and restrictions on voting rights.

He rebutted critics, naysayers and the Republican White House hopefuls, but also acknowledged his own failure to transform the country’s bitter politics and unite the nation. His optimism was meant to draw a contrast with what the White House sees as doom-and-gloom scenarios peddled by the Republicans.

Obama also said he had tasked Vice President Joe Biden, whose son died past year of cancer, to lead an effort to find a cure for the disease. Bernie Sanders, who is running for the Democratic nomination.

Foster also said he was heartened that the president mentioned prescription drug abuse early on in the speech. American officials said Tehran had given assurances the sailors would be returned safely and promptly.

“You’ll be pretty lonely, because you’ll be debating our military, most of America’s business leaders, the majority of the American people, nearly the entire scientific community, and 200 nations around the world who agree it’s a problem and intend to solve it”.

“While we’re certainly not expecting much new, there is one thing that we hope to hear from the president”. Behind Obama sat a new House speaker, Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, who last week celebrated sending legislation to Obama’s desk for the first time uprooting the health legislation.

He vowed a robust campaign to “take out” the Islamic State group, but chastised Republicans for “over the top claims” about the extremist group’s power.

The State of the Union address, a kind of annual progress report from the president, represents one of Obama’s last opportunities to claim a large television audience as president.

During his one-hour address before a joint sessions of Congress, Obama laid mostly kept away from the tradition of past presidents of reinforcing his tenure, opting to close with stating his biggest frustration as president.

Obama, delivering his last State of the Union speech to Congress before leaving office next year, said it was fiction to declare the United States was in economic decline or getting weaker on the worldwide stage.
