Obama defends forthcoming gun restrictions as constitutional

Instead President Obama has chose to take meaningless executive actions that will do little, if anything, to curb gun violence and will have the effect of letting the epidemic rage on – even as “no training” laws for carriers grow in more states, open carry becomes more widespread and sensitive places are being forced to allow guns.

“I get letters from responsible gun owners who grieve with us every time these tragedies happen; who share my belief that the Second Amendment guarantees a right to bear arms; and who share my belief we can protect that right while keeping an irresponsible, risky few from inflicting harm on a massive scale”, he said.

Mr Obama met Attorney General Loretta Lynch, FBI Director James Comey and other top law enforcement officials on Monday to discuss detailed measures the President can take without congressional approval.

After seeing a broad set of gun control initiatives repeatedly stalled or defeated by Congress, White House sources said last week it would pursue unilateral action, likely including some effort to bolster background check requirements for a wide range of sellers, enraging critics who see this as presidential overreach.

According to CNN, Trump is vowing to undo the executive actions Obama will take this week.

Federally licensed gun sellers are required by law to seek criminal background checks before completing a sale. We’ll be making sure that people have a very clear understanding of what can make a difference and what we can do, although we have to be very clear that this is not going to solve every violent crime in this country.

To reduce gun violence, Representative Wilson said the government needs to reform mental health services and focus on securing the nations borders.

Republicans candidates rejected the proposals, including those who have backed some gun control measures in the past.

Gun control advocates are also anticipating that the administration will bolster regulations on the reporting of lost and stolen guns. He tried the legislative route in 2013, pushing hard for a package that included expanded background checks. He’s slated to make his case for changes in his State of the Union address on January 12. It will take place at the George Mason University in Virginia, with a live audience representing different sides of the debate. Decrying what he said was the subversion of Congress, Mr Ryan said the country deserved “a president who will respect their constitutional rights – all of them”.

The measures Obama is said to be considering could extend common sense reviews to hundreds of thousands of gun transactions a year.

However, Obama’s push to rally municipalities around gun control might meet hurdles in states where laws prevent cities and counties from regulating firearms and ammunition.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said on “Fox News Sunday” that Obama “wants to act as if he is a king, as if he is a dictator”. He added: “I think that’s what the president is trying to do and I think that will be the right thing to do”.
