Obama endorses self-driving cars as USA issues safety checklist

None of this means that Uber was breaking the rules by letting its auto drive in autonomous mode on California roads, especially since a witness account states otherwise.

Self-driving cars are quickly gaining momentum, and now the US government is stepping in to help regulate the new technology. Some 35,200 people died on the nation’s roads previous year, 94 percent because of human error or choice.

“In the seven-and-a-half years of my presidency, self-driving cars have gone from sci-fi fantasy to an emerging reality with the potential to transform the way we live”, Obama wrote. Self-driving vehicles could also help senior citizens and people with disabilities who can’t drive on their own.

In long-awaited guidelines for the booming industry of automated vehicles, the Obama administration promised strong safety oversight, but sent a clear signal to automakers that the door was wide open for driverless cars.

President Barack Obama is giving his blessing to self-driving cars. “Americans deserve to know they’ll be safe today even as we develop and deploy the technologies of tomorrow”.

The DOT’s comprehensive policy overview on self-driving cars, released Tuesday, presents safety guidelines for self-driving vehicle manufacturers – from data recording to crashworthiness and cybersecurity – in addition to distinguishing what federal and state government responsibilities are and outlining the existing and possibly new regulatory tools necessary to monitor self-driving cars.

He wrote about the new rules being released for autonomous vehicles. A close look at the video does show the driver’s hands were on the wheel at the time the turn was made, however that’s also the case when the cars are in autonomous mode. They are on the roads, becoming available to the general public – and the government wants to make sure the people, and the government, are ready. Ford recently promised to have its first mass-market self-driving vehicle ready by 2021. Americans aren’t quite ready. “What’s more, the quickest way to slam the brakes on innovation is for the public to lose confidence in the safety of new technologies”.

Countless experts and elected officials are excited about the prospect of self-driving cars.

“We left some areas intentionally vague because we wanted to outline the areas that need to be addressed and leave the rest to innovators”, said Bryan Thomas, a spokesman for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

“Technology also creates new work opportunities while disrupting existing ones”. Numerous city’s residents have questioned the move, and Mayor Bill Peduto told Inverse last week that many of these fears come down to a lack of understanding of self-driving tech.
