Screen reports that this tops the £9.48m made by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 on Friday July 8th, 2011.
“The Force Awakens” has already grossed more than $250 million worldwide.
“The Force Awakens”, which has had its legions of fans frothing at the mouth ever since its mooted release, has grossed an estimated 129.5 million internationally since it opened overseas on Wednesday, setting records in Britain, Germany, Norway and Sweden.
“Sisters”, starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, pulled in $5 million on Friday from 2,962 locations, while “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip” netted $4 million in 3,653 locations.
The new film stars Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher, the new film has also met with rave reviews around the world.
“With the increased demand for ‘Star Wars, ‘ we will continue to add showtimes to accommodate the avid fans that have been eagerly awaiting the seventh film in this blockbuster series”, said Amy Miles, CEO of Regal Entertainment Group.
“This represents a new record for the industry and portends a massive and potentially record-breaking opening day and weekend for the film”, said Paul Dergarabedian, of box office tracker Rentrak. The turnout for “Star Wars” is an encouraging result for Disney, rival media companies and movie theaters.
The box office record for an opening weekend belongs to Universal’s “Jurassic World” which premiered to $208.8 million just six months ago. The music that the legendary John Williams created is imprinted forever with us… i wish i could say the same for The Force Awakens.
A Reuters Breakingviews analysis last week calculated that Disney may be on track to triple its Lucasfilm investment and earn an average of $669 million off the franchise in each of the next six years.
Also debuting at the box office in the top ten this weekend were four other films, whose numbers seemed miniscule compared to the “Star Wars” hauling.
