“For the third time in my presidency – I nearly got ahead of myself and said the fourth – give it up for the Stanley Cup champions, from my hometown, the Chicago Blackhawks”, Obama said in his opening remarks.

Chicago won its third title in six seasons by defeating the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games last June.

Obama, a Chicago sports fan, opened his welcome address asking if he could spend his own day with the Stanley Cup.

The president said he hopes the Blackhawks can squeeze one more visit in before he leaves office. Directly behind Obama is Joel Quenneville, head coach, left.

Obama is now considering whom to nominate to succeed Justice Antonin Scalia, who died Saturday.

“Thank you for the good work that you are doing as an organization, on and off the ice”, Obama said. Obama did call it the best gift he’s ever gotten. His pleading for a Chicago team to win, even if it’s the Cubs, drew a laugh from the crowd. “It’s cool to have been done three times while President Obama has been in the White House”.

Blackhawks chairman Rocky Wirtz presented Obama with a parking pass to the United Center, which the president joked he would sell on eBay and profit off the value.
