Obama, Iraqi leader focus on Mosul
The Islamic State seized Iraq’s second-largest city in 2014 when Iraqi army troops fled en masse or were slaughtered, shocking USA and Iraqi officials who vowed to retake the city. Iraq plays a major role in this region and it can be a stabilising force, a stabilising country for the whole region; we have one of the best anti terrorist forces in iraq.performing, fighting Daesh, carrying out missions to defeat the terrorist….

File picture shows Iraqi security forces waiting for vehicles to travel to Mosul to fight against militants of Islamic State at an Iraqi army base in Camp Taji in Baghdad, Iraq February 21, 2016. Rasool highlighted that the Iraqi Armed Forces can not move forward into Mosul while as along as terrorists keep control of Shergat, and recalled that they had already regained control of other towns in the north of that locality. Washington considers the Iraqi government’s handling of the displacement to be a major test case for reconciliation in Iraq, given the blend of sectarian groups with an interest in the northern city’s future. “Our goal is to liberate the people of Mosul. and we ask them to shake up Daesh and expel them from Mosul or kill them”, he said at a news conference in Baghdad.
Mr Key has not yet commented in response to Mr al-Abadi’s request. There is a gap in the moat on the western approach to the city, so fighters could slip out through the desert and into Syria to regroup if they ultimately decide to surrender Mosul.
But after the meeting, Mr al-Abadi told reporters: “We want more support and we want extended support”.
The defeat exposed deep flaws in Iraq’s military, but since then a USA -led coalition has sent military advisors and attack jets to bolster the government side.
The United States alone now has 4,460 troops in the country, backed by hundreds more from Western allies, advising and assisting Iraqi government and Kurdish forces.
“These operations pave the way for cleansing every inch of Iraqi land and God willing its end will be the liberation of Mosul city, … the liberation of all Iraqi lands and the end of Daesh”, he said, using an Arabic acronym for Islamic State. Still, Obama said he and Abadi were confident that Iraq’s military and the US -led coalition could make progress in Mosul “fairly rapidly”, adding that he was hoping for progress by year-end.

Obama said once the Mosul operation was finished, it would be necessary to rebuild the city to prevent militants and extremists from returning.
