Obama, Iraqi prime minister plan attack on Islamic State stronghold

Iraqi security forces will be ready by next month for an assault on the Islamic State stronghold of Mosul, the top general in the U.S. military said Wednesday.

Vice President Joe Biden will meet Abadi Thursday. The U.S. told invited countries that they must show up with significant commitments in hand to resettle and support more people displaced from that country.

The Iraqi army is gearing up for a major offensive in to purge Daesh from Mosul, the country’s second city.

“We feel confident that we will be in a position to move forward fairly rapidly”, Mr Obama said, vowing to fight “right at the heart of the ISIL operation in Mosul”.
