In a statement, Obama said Dominguez’s deep knowledge of the financial system, monetary policy and worldwide markets qualifies her to serve at “this important time for our economy”.

Dominguez is a professor of public policy and economics at UM. The Federal Reserve is an independent body that sets the nation’s monetary policy.

In addition to being a faculty member at the University of Michigan, Dominguez has spent the last 15 years as a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Her research interests include topics in worldwide financial markets and macroeconomics and she has written numerous articles and a book on foreign exchange rate behavior. The position was created by the 2010 Dodd-Frank financial reform law, but Obama has not nominated a candidate. She was a research consultant for the World Bank, the global Monetary Fund, and the Bank for global Settlements.

Dominguez has an A.B. from Vassar College and a Ph.D.in Economics from Yale University.
