Obama nominates Pakistan-American Abid Qureshi as first ever Muslim federal judge

Senate Republicans have promised not to hold any hearings on Obama’s nominees since he picked Judge Merrick Garland to serve in the US Supreme Court in March.

I am pleased to nominate Mr. Qureshi to serve on the United States District Court bench.

While his nomination is historic – and flies in the face of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s contention earlier this year that Muslim judges might be biased – it is also unlikely to result in Qureshi landing a federal judgeship anytime soon. He says he is confident that the new federal judge will serve fellow Americans with steadfast commitment and honesty. He has been partner at a Latham and Watkins, a law firm based in Washington DC since 2006, leading their pro bono efforts since 2012, reported The National Law Journal.

“The nomination of Abid Qureshi to fill a seat on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia sends a message of inclusion that is welcomed by the American Muslim community and by all Americans who value diversity and mutual respect at a time when some seek division and discord”, said Nihad Awad, the National Executive Director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

Qureshi, born in Pakistan, received a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University in 1977 and a law degree from Harvard Law School in 1997.

“Mr Qureshi’s profound commitment to the rule of law and justice for people of all backgrounds makes him an exceptional nominee”.

While a number of American Muslims have served with distinction as judges at the state level, there has never been a Muslim judge at the federal trial or appellate levels.

But Muslim advocates see this nomination as a victory and so should those Americans who may feel politically or judicially marginalized.

Despite what stands against his nomination, Qureshi could stand a chance moving forward during the “lame duck” Congress, or, should Hillary Clinton win in November, she could renominate Qureshi in 2017.
