Obama officially endorses Hillary Clinton as democratic party nominee

“I’m with her, I am fired up, and I can not wait to get out there to campaign for Hillary”, he added. Clinton has already begun to pivot to the general election in November, calling on Sanders supporters to rally to her side to defeat the likely Republican nominee, business mogul Donald Trump.

President Barack Obama has announced his formal endorsement of Hillary Clinton for president.

Obama and Vice President Joe Biden met with Sanders in Washington, DC on Thursday, but they did not encourage him to end his campaign, according to the White House. He said his campaign would be fully engaged in the Washington, D.C., primary election next week, the final of the primary season. He praised Clinton’s judgement and her toughness.

Her left-wing rival Bernie Sanders has already vowed to fight on, telling backers on Tuesday night: “Thank you all!”.

The tone of his remarks suggested he had accepted that Clinton is the nominee, but wants to make sure his favored issues – income inequality, reining in Wall Street and expanding health care – are on the agenda. “That’s why I know Hillary will be so good at it”, Obama says in the video.

Obama’s backing will give Clinton a potent surrogate on the campaign trail.

Mr Obama, whose approval rating has been at or above 50 per cent for most of the year, is an obvious choice to reconcile Mr Sanders and Mrs Clinton, whose primary contest became divisive and increasingly personal as the Vermont senator’s challenge grew.

“Tens of millions of Americans have made their voices heard”, said Obama.

Obama, who enjoys strong approval ratings after almost eight years in office, will campaign with Clinton next week in Wisconsin, her campaign said.

“I thought that Bernie Sanders brought enormous energy and new ideas”, he said.

Afterward, Mr Reid told reporters Mr Sanders has accepted that Mrs Clinton is effectively the Democratic nominee, but said the Vermont senator “needs a little time” to decide his next step.
