Obama reserves final state dinner for Italy’s prime minister

President Obama had some harsh words for Donald Trump’s charges that the presidential election is going to be rigged – “Stop whining”.

Renzi, seemingly nodding to the divisive presidential election in the USA next month and the United Kingdom’s decision to exit the European Union, said, “I think there are a lot of people who think that politics is only about screaming, fighting each other”.

Obama said Trump’s attempts to discredit the election process are “unprecedented” and “based on no facts”, adding that the candidate’s “irresponsible” claims about voter fraud further prove he’s unfit to be president.

With opinion polls showing him falling further back in recent days against his White House rival, Democrat Hillary Clinton, Trump has intensified his allegations, although numerous studies have shown voter fraud in US elections is rare.

“Tomorrow, our country will be the guest for President Obama’s final state dinner”.

In an interview on Radio 105, he said that Italy being chosen as the guest of honour was a “great gesture of friendship” on the part of the U.S. president.

Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi heads to the United States on Monday for a high-profile visit that he hopes will boost his flagging campaign for a referendum on constitutional reform.

Outgoing US President Barack Obama has fired a parting shot at European Union leaders over their economic policies and offered strong backing to Italy’s Matteo Renzi ahead of a crucial referendum.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., the highest-ranking Italian American in US politics, and her husband, Paul Pelosi, are among the guests. But when he was asked about Mr Trump’s rhetoric, he did not hold back.

With Donald Trump’s path to electoral victory appearing increasingly narrow, Hillary Clinton is confidently advancing into states the Democrats haven’t won in decades, as Trump attempts to focus attention on new allegations about the investigation into her email.

And, the president argued, it shows such a person who cries foul isn’t ready for the challenges of the Oval Office. The same nationalist and anti-trade forces that have propelled Trump to the top of the Republican ticket are at work in Europe, too.

“Matteo has the right approach, and it’s beginning to show results”, Obama said.

“My only worry is, logistically, I really like hot plates and hot food”, Batali said Monday at the White House, where he and four chefs who accompanied him from NY had already started prepping ingredients.

“That’s what Americans do”, he said.

Obama said Tuesday the version Trump and other Republicans are talking about is “just not true”.

Tuesday’s State Dinner with Italy will be created to highlight America’s “bountiful fall harvest”, with an array of traditional Italian dishes infused with elements of American cuisine. To mark the occasion this time, Italian-American celebrity chef Mario Batali will prepare the food while Grammy-winning Gwen Stefani will sing for the 500 guests.
