Obama Revamps No Child Left Behind
“Because of this legislation, Oklahomans will no longer have to beg for yearly waivers from the federal government to decide upon our own state educational standards, and we will not have to worry about students losing instructional time to prepare for a federal test”.

The new law eliminates the federal mandate that teacher evaluations be tied to student performance on the statewide tests.
A bipartisan education bill signed into law by President Barack Obama on Thursday will grant states a larger role in overseeing K-12 education.
This is what’s modified within the two laws: The Drawback No Child Left Behind: The Elementary & Secondary Education Act of 1965, signed by President Lyndon Johnson, was a civil rights law in that offered education funding to states & tried to make sure in that each student had access to an education. “The impact from this is great and will allow us to design programs that benefit Oklahomans to measure success in our schools”.
No Child Left Behind: The 2002 law did not address the Common Core standards specifically, since they didn’t emerge until later that decade.
The law says the federal government may not mandate or give states incentives to adopt or maintain any particular set of academic standards, such as Common Core. Whip Hoyer has been a strong champion of full-service community schools for many years. Sandy Kress – Bush’s senior education adviser during the development of No Child Left Behind and a current consultant for the George W. Bush Institute – said the new law has no “bite”.
“The Every Student Succeeds Act would put education back in the hands of those who know our kids best: parents, teachers, states and school boards”, McConnell said.
KUNM: This bill effectively shifts the responsibility for academic performance to the states-we live in a state with its fair share of challenges-education is underfunded, as are many public programs, there are divisions within the state legislature and controversies within the Public Education Department-how prepared are we to control our own destiny when it comes to our schools? “Accountability. Closing the achievement gap”, Obama said Thursday.
Lawmakers have touted the new law as a more flexible approach to student testing and school accountability, once again making states responsible for fixing under-performing schools. But the law also encourages states to set caps on the amount of time students spend on testing. “By no means does this bill fix all of the issues surrounding public education in New Mexico, however, it opens a pathway for educators to return their focus to teaching students, strengthening our schools, and help our students to reach their full potential”. “I appreciate that this legislation restores the proper balance between the role of states and the federal government in education accountability”, Wise said in a statement.

“What has happened in this country is that public schooling has been reduced to testing, testing, testing”, said Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, which already has successfully challenged the teacher-evaluation system in New Mexico and has cases pending in Texas, Florida and NY. “We look forward to the increased flexibility and authority provided by the ESSA” said White. “I fought hard to break through the gridlock and dysfunction in Congress to get this done, because I heard from too many families that the old law simply wasn’t working for them”.
