Obama’s SCOTUS pick is ‘plausibly confirmable’ nominee, expert says

Obama fulfilled has responsibility of nominating Garland, Lankford said.

Human Rights Campaign President Chad Griffin said: “Americans deserve a full Supreme Court bench, and President Obama’s nominee deserves a hearing”.

Garland is chief judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, considered just a step below the Supreme Court in its clout because of its jurisdiction over administration policy. The Senate’s role is to confirm the nomination. Appointed to the Supreme Court in 1986 by President Ronald Reagan, Justice Scalia steadfastly defended the right of elected lawmakers to enact laws that protect unborn children and their mothers, and he often criticized the judicially manufactured barriers that limited such legislative efforts.

President Obama has nominated Merrick Garland to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Flake said while Republican leaders were “fully justified” in delaying action on confirmation, if the Republicans lose the White House race the Republican-led Senate “ought to look at this nomination in a lame-duck session in November”.

Reactions to Garland’s nomination fell predictably on party lines. Hoover lost the election to Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

Taft lost the presidency to Woodrow Wilson. “This SCOTUS (Supreme Court of the United States) process could take a while during this political season so let’s wait and see what happens”, M R Rangaswami, a Silicon Valley-based entrepreneur and philanthropist, said. From here, Garland’s chances of being the next justice fall to the Senate’s discretion. He remained in Oklahoma City for weeks at a time as he tended to every aspect of the case. “Now I’m hearing more and more voices from my colleagues who are willing to sit down with him”, the Maine senator said. Cochran’s office said Wednesday the senator has no comment on Garland’s qualifications. Ayotte and Portman are among a half-dozen Republican senators in competitive re-election contests who Democrats hope will be pressured into backing hearings and a vote on Garland or be punished for their refusal by voters. “Once again, I saw the importance of assuring victims and families that the justice system could work. Either way, our view is this: Give the people a voice in the filling of this vacancy”.
