Obama starts 2016 with a fight over gun control
He’ll discuss the issue and take questions from the audience.

Although visitors at the Antique Gun and Military Collector Show Saturday in Raleigh opinions vary on gun control, most did say guns are a necessary part of life.
The conservative advocacy group Freedom Watch plans to sue to block any executive order on gun control, Larry Klayman, the group’s general counsel, told Reuters on Sunday. “Anytime there’s a mass shooting, obviously that tends to spur gun sales”, said Mike Kent, manager of the Land of the Sky Gun and Knife Show taking place at the WNC Agricultural Center. The Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution guarantees the right to bear arms.
President Barack Obama’s expected new executive actions on gun control are drawing sharp criticism from Republican presidential candidates ahead of their release.
That includes Sen. Bernie Sanders.
On Sunday, the Vermont Senator criticized Republicans for failing to work with Democrats on the issue.
Federally licensed gun sellers by law have to seek criminal background checks before finalising a sale.
Jeb Bush, also on Fox News Sunday: “It’s wrong”.
In this week’s address, the President reflected on the progress of the past year, and looked forward to working on unfinished business in the coming year, particularly when it comes to the epidemic of gun violence.
No major gun-control measure has emerged from Washington since a 1994 assault weapons ban, which expired ten years later and wasn’t renewed.
The address to Congress is a high-profile opportunity for the president to try to reassure the public about his national security stewardship after the terrorism attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, California.
Mr Obama delivered a devastatingly frank, honest address to the nation in October previous year after the Umpqua Community College shooting in which 10 people were killed (including the perpetrator). Obama pressed the U.S. Congress on Friday to avoid a government shutdown when federal spending authority runs out on March 27, saying it is the “right thing to do”.
Rhodes spoke to reporters in Honolulu hours before Obama flew back to Washington from a family vacation in Hawaii.
“Each time, we’re told that commonsense reforms like background checks might not have stopped the last massacre, or the one before that, so we shouldn’t do anything”, Obama said. “They don’t do them”, Trump added.
But a number of Republican presidential candidates this weekend denounced Obama’s potential plans.
Rhodes also said the US wasn’t shifting its position on whether to announce further sanctions on Iran in response to recent ballistic missile launches. Gun sales surged after the San Bernardino killings, but Rhodes said arming citizens is a “dangerous and slippery slope”.

Speaking with reporters at a town hall in Milford, New Hampshire, Rubio said that “executive actions are created to implement law, created to help the implementation of law – not to undermine the law”. Yet the changes will not stop purchasers from buying firearms at gun shows without a check.
