Obama to cite progress on veterans’ issues in Monday speech
“No one has given more for our freedom and our security than our Gold Star families”, Obama said in remarks at the Disabled American Veterans National Convention in Atlanta, without mentioning Trump’s name. HUD said it has housed to date about 114,000 homeless veterans, working with landlords and veteran-housing vouchers and coordinating with VA health care and supportive services.

VA Secretary Robert McDonald announced a major part of his plan at the Disabled American Veterans Convention, and it involves Atlanta.
The President is reiterating his call for comprehensive legislative modernization of the appeals process. He’ll also tout administration progress on reducing homelessness among veterans. And he said homelessness among veterans has been cut almost in half, though he set a goal during his election campaign to reduce it to zero by 2015.
In 2014, First Lady Michelle Obama launched the Mayors Challenge to End Veteran Homelessness with the goal of accelerating progress toward the ambitious national goal of ending veteran homelessness.
“That’s going to mean 200 more responders ready to talk with veterans in crisis”.
President Barack Obama issued a barely veiled denouncement of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s feud with the parents of a USA serviceman killed in Iraq, saying that such families should be honored by the nation. Outrage over the delays cost Obama’s first Veteran Affairs secretary his job.
His replacement, Robert McDonald, said Monday that a key reason for falling short of the goal was because of problems in Los Angeles, which he said has the largest veteran homeless population in the country.
More than a half-million veterans have donated their health and genetic data to a research database that Obama said eventually will benefit not just former military members, but all Americans.
Isakson says his bill is big because there’s a lot that needs to be done. Clinton would make changes to the existing system.
Demand for VA health care continues to grow, increasing 13 per cent in the past year despite lingering concerns, DAV Executive Director Garry Augustine said in an interview.
And given the inexcusable problems of long wait times that came to light, we’ll keep using every tool at our disposal to expand access to care-extending clinic hours, opening new facilities, using new tools like telehealth, and leveraging care in the community. VA already has been making changes in line with the commission’s recommendations. More than 450,000 appeals are pending, with veterans waiting an average of three years for a decision.
But Obama, who leaves office in January, said his successor must improve mental health care for veterans and that the nation made a “sacred covenant” to guarantee ex-military members health care benefits they earned while serving.
“The fact that VA increases in spending on homeless initiatives are far outpacing reductions in veteran homelessness calls into question the efficacy of VA’s efforts”, Miller said. Please see our terms of service for more information.
