The shootings and bombings killed 130 people and prompted France, Germany and the U.K.to step up the offensive against Islamic State in Syria and Iraq. The White House is also planning to meet with major Silicon Valley companies to see how best to restrict the use of social media for promoting or planning violence.

ISIS has not claimed the San Bernardino massacre but said the assault was perpetrated by followers of the group.

“The president stands up and says the Islamic state is not Islamic”. He says they represent a “tiny fraction” of the Muslim community. He is cautioning Americans not to single out Muslims.

Obama has been frustrated by his failure to convince Congress to pass tougher gun laws despite a series of horrific mass shootings during his time in office.

Today at 8:00 pm (0100 GMT Monday) from the Oval Office, he will again look to reassure the American people in the wake of the attack, which the FBI is investigating as a possible act of terrorism.

Democrats have called for tighter gun control laws, with Senate Democrats putting forward two provisions in a reconciliation bill last week that got voted down by Republicans.

President Barack Obama will try to reassure a nervous nation on Sunday that he has a plan to defeat the fast-evolving threat of terrorism, as fears multiply of ISIS attacks on the homeland and public trust in his handling of the threat has dipped to record lows. “We are strong. And we are resilient”. CBS is planning a special report anchored by Scott Pelley that will interrupt part of a two-hour “60 Minutes”. The FBI is investigating the shooting as a possible act of terrorism.

“The investigation so far has developed indications of radicalization by the killers and of potential inspiration by foreign terrorist organizations”, Comey said Friday.

Prior to Sunday’s Oval Office address, Obama has used the platform only twice before: in 2010, regarding the end of US operations in Iraq, and the Gulf oil spill.

Obama is scheduled to speak to the nation at 8 p.m. EST. If it is such, it will be the deadliest terror attack on U.S. soil since 9/11.
