Obama’s night playlist includes the work from Al Green, Van Morrison and Erykah Badu. Two of the most modern records that appear are Justin Timberlake’s “Pusher Love Girl” and Florence + The Machine’s “Shake It Off”. Can we expect Joe Biden to release a list of songs he likes to blast when he drops the top in his Corvette and hits the open road? The lists were “hand-picked” by the president, according to a White House blog post, and feature a wide variety of popular genres. On Friday, Spotify announced that the White House was launching a channel on the streaming service.
Both collections have their own Twitter Hashtag: #POTUSPlaylist, including the 1 hour and 32 minutes day mix as well as the other playlist dubbed, “The President’s Summer Playlist: Night”. On Thursday, the White House released the list of six books that he took with him.
Barack Obama, in turn, seemed destined to be remembered as our first R&B president, if only for that suave reading of “Let’s Stay Together” at a fundraiser in 2012.
Despite the playlists being intended for different times of the day, there’s no clear stylistic or thematic distinction between them.
President Obama definitely put some thought into his curating job.
Beyonce also made the cut for her song “Superpower”, with Frank Ocean.
