Obama to Resettle 110000 Muslim Refugees in US Next Year
Children play at the yard of an abandoned school used by volunteers for hosting families of refugees from Syria and Afghanistan in Athens on June 27. The crisis has led over 1 million people to escape to Europe in 2015 alone. For the Near East and South Asia region, the regional target number is 40,000, he revealed.

The administration did not release a country-specific breakdown. “A total of 14,000 slots were listed as not allocated”. He briefed lawmakers on the revised figure on Tuesday.
According to a Military Times report, the 110,000 goal covers a 12-month period that will start this October.
Those governors should take comfort in the federal government’s record of screening out refugee applicants with criminal or terrorist connections, said Avril Haines, principal deputy national security adviser at the White House. That includes 47% who are “Very Concerned”. Millions of Syrians have been displaced by a civil war that has killed roughly half a million people. Some of the states even filed lawsuits to stop the resettlement but these were unsuccessful.
The White House unveiled plans to increase refugee admissions to 110,000 next year amid a fraught U.S. debate over the appropriate numbers to take in.
“Ahead of hosting the “Leaders’ Summit on Refugees” at the United Nations on September 20, “[Obama] is trying to send a signal to other countries that they should increase the number they resettle”, said Jennifer Quigley, a refugee protection advocacy strategist with nonprofit group Human Rights First, to the Wall Street Journal. But she noted Congress still has to provide money to screen more refugees entering the country.
The Obama Administration has been making strides to allow in more Syrian refugees.
Republicans tried to pass blockades to restrict benefits for Syrian refugees seeking asylum in the USA, but they did not rally enough support.
African refugees would comprise the second-largest population of refugees at 35,000. In an interview, he said the United Nations was discussing those needs with the U.S.
But many USA lawmakers have resisted or denounced the President’s decision to let in more refugees.
“The United States is deeply committed to assisting some of the world’s most vulnerable refugees through the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program”, the department said in a statement. Myanmar sent almost 4,000 more refugees than it had in 2014, according to an analysis from the Migration Policy Institute.
The ethnic conflicts were on the agenda Wednesday when Obama met with Burma’s state counselor Aung San Suu Kyi, who is in Washington for a two-day visit. “15,000 refugees are resettled in the USA every year. This could be the great Trojan horse of all time”, he said, reprising a warning that terrorists including members of the Islamic State extremist group will sneak into the United States as refugees. Should more people arrive, it would put us under pressure, then we would go into so-called crisis mode. Of that number, 1,229 have been resettled in MI – more than in any other state except California, which saw 1,337 Syrians resettled. But of the millions of exiles from the Syrian war, only about 10,000 have reached USA shores.

Last year, in the wake of the November attacks in Paris, Gov. Rick Snyder was among several governors who said Homeland Security needed to review its vetting procedures for refugees, though unlike some other governors he never specifically called for resettlements to cease in MI.
